Flannel never gets old
Just got an email from Spin with this dandy surprise.

Nothing too out of bounds for these guys but anything new is…

9 years ago today, Layne Staley passed away. I hate drug addicts but sometimes they show a glimmer of something that makes me feel sympathetic. Layne was that guy. He was tortured and brilliant and everything that Kurt Cobain wanted us to believe he was.
Nutshell and River Of Deceit make me feel. It's not always a good feeling but a great reminder that I do own a modicum of humanity. Thanks…

Seems like reports of Scott Wieland's antics have all but disappeared so I did a quick search to if the Stone Temple Pilots reunion collapsed or otherwise suffered a death.
Nope! Reports coming from New Zealand say that Scott has given up his prima donna ways and is giving it his all…

Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave ax slinger is set to release a third Nightwatchmen disc in the coming months on New West Records. If you haven't heard the Nightwatchmen it's absolutely worth a listen or two. Think Nick Cave filtered through a socialist pussy machine with a splash of…

Looks like my summer concert schedule just got another date reserved. A Perfect Circle is hitting the road! Can't wait to hear one of my all time favorite songs, Three Libras, performed live. Sadly I had no idea that James Iha is in the band now. Another minor bonus.
Here are the…

Remember when the Pixies announced that they were reforming and touring? It was like Christmas morning and a handjob all rolled into one. Well, the excitement has died down and the Pixies have gotten comfortable with each other again. They're just a good touring band these days.
As just a good…

Since the early days, there has been a distinct separation between the metal camp and the artsier alt scene. A few bands (AIC, Soundgarden) cross the lines. A distinctly artsy act got a nice mention on the pinnacle celebration of all things metal this week when Eddie Trunk gave King's X a huge and unexpected…

Everybody's favorite miniature, balding warbler, Eddie Vedder, is going to release a solo album of ukulele based songs on May31st. I'll give it a go but can't seeing this being a classic. There is such a thing as progressively experimenting with sound but there is abusing a novelty instrument. Until the memory of… Continue

I saw Bjork recently on some random IFC movie a couple of nights ago (I didnt care enough about the movie to remember the name) and it prompted me to wonder about everybody's favorite Icelandic pixie.
Well, lo and behold, Bjork is back in the news! She's take up residency at Campfield…

All too often the "alternative" types are quick to pass off rap as marginal and lacking artistic merit. Well, that's just unfair. Dr. Dre, Snoop, Tupac, Biggie, and the assorted cast of characters were every bit as important to the shaping of contemporary music as Pearl Jam and Nirvana.
We…

Portlandia - The place where the 90's still live. I wanna move there. Or at least watch a taping of the sketch show.
I've been chuckling at the IFC show since it premiered but had no idea that a former member of Sleater Kinney was the star. Carrier Brownstein was a…

Just ran a search to see if Cris Kirkwood had been released from jail and lo and behold a new Meat Puppets album is going to be released on April 12th. As an added bonus, Cris is out of jail and will be on the new record. Fantastic news all around.
Couldnt find any leaked tracks but I…

Primus just came up on the shuffle and I had to do a search to see if they are working on a new album. Got a huge surprise by finding that they are playing a huge festival in the Mobile Alabama area in May. The lineup of the…

After 26 years of making some pretty good music, the Georgia legislature will honor Drivin' and Cryin' with a special day of recognition on March 10th. It's well deserved. I've seen these guys a dozen times in shitty bars over the years without much fanfare. Glad I'm not the only one that has…

Dinosaur Jr. front man and guitar genius will be taking the subdued tracks from his new solo album, Several Shades of Why, out for a two month tour soon. Cant wait for the Athens GA show!
Check out a track on Pitchfork and then buy a ticket or two.

Soundgarden is the metal. Sure Alice in Chains gets the love from the old timey metal community but for me, Soundgarden is one notch short of being a thrash band. Or at least they were on the first two releases. Badmotorfinger is..... a classic metal album.
Of all the money grab reunions, this is the one I'm most interested in.
Anyway,…

The Sasquatch Music Festival in George Washington is fast becoming my festival of choice this summer. I've spent the last five years in Oklahoma sweating it out with the 80's rockers, it's probably time for a change of pace.
With the Foo Fighters and Modest Mouse on the bill, Sasquatch is calling me.
See the full lineup here.
